Finding Your “Me Time”

As much as I love being with my kids, I have to carve out a little “me time” every once in a while. So, how does a busy stay-at-home mom plan some free time during the day for a much needed shopping spree? Here are a few hints.

Trade Time Off with a Friend

You and another stay at home mom can take turns watching the kids while one of you enjoys a few precious hours of alone time. This arrangement works best if you only do it every couple of weeks and allow each other equal time to be away.

Hire a Trustworthy Sitter

You may be able to find a local college student who doesn’t have very many day time classes and can watch your kids one day every week or so. Of course, you’ll want to check references before leaving your children with a new sitter. Once you find a responsible person, you can ask the sitter to watch your kids and a friend’s kids. Even though the sitter will charge a little more to watch more children, you and your friend can split the cost, meaning you’ll save money.

Find a Mother’s Day Out Program

Some daycare facilities offer drop-in programs on a pay-as-you-go system. This allows moms to leave their kids in a safe place while they run errands or shop. Typically, the fees are higher than if you enrolled your kids for regular care, but you can also avoid enrollment fees by only using the drop-in care services.

By giving yourself a few hours to shop for clothes and handbags from Dereon or to browse the shelves at your favorite bookstore, you’ll be a better mother in the long run. You’ll feel happy, relaxed, and refreshed when you pick up your kids.

Was there someone before Columbus who found America?

Researchers think that navigators from Polynesia might have landed in America much before Christopher Columbus did in 1492. Researchers feel that the Polynesian explorer might have chosen the Pacific Ocean route, and landed on that part of the shore.

Historians are now wondering if the first contact of the Native Americans with the outside world was indeed through Christopher Columbus. In references to historical achievements, the conquests of the Pacific Island explorers are often overlooked. Based on the fact that during that time Columbus had the best navigation technology, the abilities of other land-discoverers were questioned.

Many stories did their rounds to finally get Pacific Island explorers out of the list. They felt that discovery of land was beyond the navigational capabilities of ill-equipped primitive explorers. But what about the theory that was developed by the Europeans that the Earth was flat and sailing far away will topple them off the Earth?

On the other hand the explorers of the Pacific Islands were fearless. Even if they felt that the Earth was flat, they were brave and unflinching in their explorative zeal. Anthologists felt that Polynesian navigators sailed far and wide in hope of finding new lands.

But most of these endeavors were not documented. Due to the illiteracy of the Polynesian explorers, everything remained word-of-mouth. Whereas, when the Europeans travelled, much of it was documented and projected to the outside world. This is where the Polynesian explorers fell flat.

An examination of Polynesia’s orally transmitted historical inferences reveal their settlement patterns. Even cultural inferences raised a lot of interest, in that it perfectly tallied with certain elements of culture that was prevalent in ‘undiscovered America’.

A lot of prominent researchers, historians, academicians, anthropologists, anthologists, and scientists are engaging themselves to prove this fact. If proved it will be a big blow to conservative beliefs that America was discovered by the Europeans. Surely, it will be a big and controversial revelation if proved, that someone came much before Columbus.

Austin, Texas is a popular place for music and is called the “Live Music Capital of the World.” While this may be a lofty designation, the city does truly lives up to its claim. Compared to any other city in the United States, Austin has more per capita music venues. Most of the music scene takes place on the famous 6th Street strip, but the undisputed king of events is the yearly South By Southwest Festival (SXSW).

SXSW began in 1987 as an Austin Battle of the Bands that centered on the downtown convention center. Today it is one of the largest music festivals in the United States, drawing thousands of performers from around the world as well as international visitors.

For four days each March, Austin is descended upon by artists playing all sorts of music. Events are held for the duration at more than 70 venues around the city. This festival is particularly popular with up-and-coming bands and groups who want to break into the mainstream market, and it has proved especially popular among little known British bands that can make their careers in just a few shows.

SXSW is not just for little known acts. Music legends are also in attendance, either playing sets or often found giving talks at any number of scheduled conferences. This festival is Austin’s largest money making event, and these four days alone can eclipse all other events for the year, combined.

Austin City Limits is another festival that has garnered much attention. Featuring more than 130 bands at more than eight stages for duration of three days, this festival draws some of the world’s best known bands and musicians. Like Aaron Basha collectibles, Austin’s music scene is truly unique. Live music experiences are dying out in other cities, and but in Austin, events both large and small are scheduled just about every day of the week.

Finding Affordable Vacations

Even if you’re on a budget (as many of us are!) and are watching your spending, you can still enjoy travel and vacationing without running up credit cards! The key is to find affordable vacations and travel opportunities. Here are some of the best tips for finding great vacation destinations without breaking the bank:

- Stay close to home. Instead of spending money on airfare and a week of pricey hotel accommodations, consider hopping in the car and exploring your surroundings. Most people live within driving distance to a great vacation spot, whether it’s a big city, beautiful national park, or ocean. A weekend getaway is more affordable and can be just as fun as a pricey vacation.

- Travel off-season. Don’t travel or plan vacations during peak travel times, like Thanksgiving or Christmas, where you will pay significantly more for hotels, rental cars, and flights than you would during a less-busy time.

- Sign up for deals and alerts. Many airlines, travel companies, and resorts will alert you of upcoming specials if you sign up for their e-mail alerts. Often, they notify people on their mailing lists of upcoming specials before they advertise them to everyone else, so you have a jump start on selecting flights and hotels.

- Save. If you have a dream vacation in mind, your best option is to budget and save for it so you can pay all or most of it in cash. Budget a little money each month for your vacation, and put “unexpected” money, like birthday cash or tax returns, aside for your vacation. This is better than maxing out your credit cards and coming back from a vacation stressed out because you can’t pay your bills. (If you find yourself in this situation, a debt consolidation service can be helpful.)

It’s easy to have a fun and affordable vacation!

Fantastic Fish!

Get ready to meet two of the luckiest people on the planet: Andrew and Marit Miners are lucky to be alive, and living on a fabulous limestone karst in the Pacific Islands. Their grass-thatched, solar energy and wind powered home, faces atolls that lead to the horizon of turquoise waters and periwinkle skies. Schooling fish pass them by each morning as they commute by row boat, and sometimes a dolphin or two. Are they dead in heaven, sharing a success story of hard work and proper living that leads to paradise? No, the Miners are not dead: they have made their paradise a reality.

By speedboat, the nearest settlement is West Papua, which is four hours across choppy waters. The Misool Eco Resort was the brain child of Andrew, who convinced his wife and forty friends to invest in his dream of a far away resort that would make Bangkok seem as exotic as a Wal-mart. With the funding of dear friends, and the support of his formerly prosperous wife, Andrew moved to remote waters. So remote, in fact, that from Bali it takes two days of constant travel to arrive.

Raja Ampat, or the Four Kings, has the highest concentration on the planet of marine bio-diversity. This is a fact recently discovered by scientists, who had been too busy oohing and awwing over the Galapagos Islands to notice anything else.

Wood from fallen trees was used to build the eco-friendly resort, with biological waste-fertilized gardens. There are nine elegant cottages on the water, as well as a diving center and a restaurant. Who could notice the worldly attractions when, from a cottage window, anyone can see reef shark, barracudas, stingrays, octopus, and bumphead parrotfish? This island paradise is worth the two to three day trip in each direction. Memories of pygmy seahorses, scorpion fish, and carpet sharks will warm the hearts of visitors for years after a visit to the resort of Raja Ampat.

How to Make a Six-Day Tour of England

If you want to see the sites of England but are pressed for time, consider this time line for a busy tour.

The Western Sweep. Fly into London, get a hotel, and rent a car. The next morning, drive west towards Winsdor Castle, Oxford, or Stratford-Upon-the-Avon for a half-day. After a few hours and lunch, head further west towards Bath. You can stop for dinner in Bristol before arriving at your bed and breakfast at a farm just outside Bath. The next morning, drive to the nearest Park-n-Ride, where you park your car outside Bath and take a bus to the heart of town, avoiding the cost and hassle of city parking. Spend the whole day and part of the next day visiting the Roman Baths, the fashion museum, Sally Lunn Bunns and Bath Abbey.

The Sweep Back East. After finishing the sites at Bath, swing by Stonehedge and the Salisbury Cathedral for a few hours before driving to the other side of England to Dover. Arrive at your next bed and breakfast in the country and take a walk in the beautiful countryside before calling it a day. The next morning, take a tour of the imposing Dover Castle (and consider taking a look at the famous Cliffs of Dover) before heading out to Canturbury to see the Canturbury Cathedral. Finally, turn toward London. Consider calling a train service or a traffic guide to help you avoid the awful traffic, using England’s information number, similar to Canada 411.

The London Adventure. If you miss traffic, you should be able to head downtown straight from Canturbury. However, be sure to return your car and start using the Tube for transportation. This should give you a day and a half to see the British museums, the many parks, the Thames river, Westminster Cathedral, Covent Gardens, Buckingham Palace, and maybe a show at Shakespeare’s Globe Theater.
